Associated Students proposed the much needed student fee increase to enable Associated Students to continue to sustain and enhance existing programs to serve students of the SF State community.

Our Four Goals if the Referendum Passed:
-To give you movie nights, concerts, dances and other late night events for a better college experience.
-To give you more social, cultural, educational and community based opportunities through student org funding.
-Continue to give you more scholarships, job opportunities, and internships while providing affordable childcare and legal advice.
-To ensure that your voice continues to be heard on your campus and to lead student advocacy efforts.

Cost:
The proposed increase would be paid each semester by all regularly enrolled students.

Every year Associated Students Inc has an event called Open House, which is meant to introduce our programs to students. This event is held on the third floor of our building and a majority of the traffic is on the first. I had this idea of having our staff promote the event on the first floor with custom brown empty paper bags. Their goal would be to approach students, give them a bag, and convince them to go upstairs check out the event, and fill up the bag with our free gifts. We have about 8 different programs so we will be giving out something different for each. I created this image below as the main imagery for the marketing material.

Associated Student's Project Connect has their bi-annual Book Drive event and I created all the marketing material for it. At the end of each semester our organization asks SF State students to donate their used books to this program. Project Connect provides a Book Loan Service to low-income students during the first two weeks of each semester. Books are allocated on a first come, first serve basis. Currently they have over 1,500 book in their inventory, which grows every semester. Some of these donations are also sent to "Better World Books" for their Books for Africa program.

Associated Students Inc. is located on the second floor of the Cesar Chavez Student Center here at SF State. This building has the most foot traffic on campus mainly because of the cafeteria, the available programs, and the student clubs. Many programs and clubs hang banners on the second floor for other students to see. I've created a banner to help increase our website's traffic.

I was given the opportunity to create the marketing material for Rocky Rivera, a SFSU Alumni/Hip Hop Journalist/MC. Her team provided me with this photograph and the logo, which contains her full name and the red heart. I created a tabloid size poster and a digital plasma sign for the two monitors located in the Cesar Chavez Student Center at SF State.

Here is a short bio on Rocky Rivera:

Rocky Rivera is a Hip-Hop journalist by day, MC by night, who found international acclaim by winning a Contributing Editor position on MTV's docu-series "I'm From Rolling Stone" in 2007. After lacking inspiration in the literary world, she decided to finally pursue Hip-Hop as a participant, not only as an observer, and began to fill the void with thought-provoking music that you can dance to. (Think Lauryn Hill meets Public Enemy with West Coast beats) A dynamic perfomer who’s shared the stage with artists such as Zion-I, Blue Scholars, and Pacific Division, her all-lady crew consisting of DJ Roza and emcee Irie Eyez display a daringly different side of Hip Hop you see to experience to believe. Noted music critic Jeff Chang, author of Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop: A History of the Hip Hop Generation writes “My whole career has been about getting people to hear the stories that need to be heard, and I think her story really needs to be heard.” Her debut album, “Rocky Rivera” is available NOW on iTunes, CD Baby and Amoeba SF & LA.

EROS is one of the programs I create marketing material for when they have campus events. I was asked to create a letter size poster, a banner, flyers, an image for Facebook, and a digital plasma sign. This event, "Careers in Sexuality Symposium" will have a panel of professionals from a variety of backgrounds discuss their career path and offer advice to students interested in pursuing a career related to human sexuality.

Spike & Mike's is a collection ("festival") of short animated films which annually tours theaters, film festivals, and college campuses in North America. It was founded in 1977 by Craig "Spike" Decker and Mike Gribble.

Joe Hernandez-Kolski (Pocho Joe) is a two-time HBO Def Poet who combines comedy, hip-hop dance and spoken word poetry. He has been performing at several colleges and universities all over the country and has created a high-energy interactive show that takes a fresh approach to discussing diversity on college campuses.

Creating this calendar took a lot of time and energy. Figuring out the grid system with the datesand the design of the months took up 80% of that time. I experimented many times with this layout, thinking the complexity of the design would define its greatness. I shot down about 10 different visually amazing layouts because I kept forgetting, "Who is the target audience?" I'm not creating this for a group a design students, I'm creating this mainly for freshman and sophomore students that need something easy to read.

The purpose of the ASI annual scholarships is to reward students who have shown exceptional leadership, to encourage students who have faced exceptional challenges and to promote the educational advancement of students at San Francisco State University.

I'm creating a poster for the scholarships and when brain storming I instantly thought "Piggy Bank!" I'm no where near done, but would like to show you all my creative process.

The goal for this assingment was to create a Flash Site that showed "How to make a paper airplane." It needed to include: introduction title, steps, tips or warnings, credits, video and audio. I figured a topic like this would only be appealing towards a younger crowd. So I decided to make my layout a school desk, which included items like a piece of binder paper, a pencil, a ruler, and an IPhone.

Web: Banner Ads: MAC Cosmetics & Jack in the Box

I was asked to make "web banners" for a company that scans data about your activities on Facebook and other social networks, infers who your best friends are, and ranks them. Then the company exploits that ranking to serve you relevant ads. It does so with something it calls “social banners,” which insert references to your best friends within advertisements. The idea is that showing you ads that reference your friends will attract your attention and thus make the ads perform better.

My test drive topics were:
1. MAC Cosmetics
2. Jack in the Box

This is what I came up with. The first ad is suppose to lure you in with a question and give you multiple choices to choose from. The second ad asks if you can share this information with your friends! The third ad includes your photo with your selection. Which is then advertised on your friends' profiles!

Print: Foldable Poster 18"x24": Japanese Tea Garden

The goal for this assignment was to create a mark and a poster for a given location in SF Golden Gate Park. The poster had to be 18" x 24", folded to 6" x 9". I chose the Japanese Tea Garden. This place amazed me as soon as I walked in. Choosing a theme for this assignment was a bit difficult at first because so many elements stood out that would of been perfect. Obviously this place was beautifully dressed with flowers, and the architecture was fantastic. Yet I wanted to do something slightly different, so instead of grasping those great elements, I decided to focus more on the mood and feeling this type of setting gives you. So after taking some notes I noticed a theme, Romance! Near the beginning of stroll though this garden I remember seeing two statues of red crown cranes in the pond. Clearly they were lovers and since 75% of projects focus on birds, I chose them as my theme. LOL

For my logo I really wanted to chose something that came across as inviting and graceful. I also wanted the colors to be strong and relevant to the Japanese culture. After pages and pages of sketching birds/cranes I was able to narrow it down to a couple that fit that criteria.

Since I really loved my crane illustrations and got great feed back about them, I decided to make them my main focus. My layout can be looked at in two ways. #1 the Japanese Flag, #2 a sun setting scene! I think this idea was very successful because I was able to showcase the Japanese culture, and the Romantic element this place gives you.

Print: Booklet: Rumplestiltskin

This project required us to design a 16 page booklet focusing on a theme centered around our Reductive Representation drawing from project 3. The booklet required 1,000 words or more, as well as many images relating to the topic. The booklet could be printed using only two colors.

For this project i decided to modify a fairy tale classic called Rumplestiltskin. Straw and a spinning wheel are mentioned in this story, so with a couple alterations to the story line, I'll sneak in the needle, thread and spool. It's a simple cautionary tale about bragging and its consequences. Since this story includes gold thread, using my reductive representation image would be a great element for the graphics of this booklet.

I chose to switch the sex of each character, for example the Miller's daughter became the Miller's son, and the King turned into a Queen. For those familiar to the story, I think this change will add a nice twist. Black and Gold are two colors I felt would best illustrate this story. The concept was to use silhouettes of very expressive graphics instead of detailed photographs. Overall, I love the psychedelic look and sexual feel of each page because it gives this child's tale an adult feel.

Don't worry, it's not permanent.

Objective: Create a perfume package for a celebrity. Use type, materials, shape, form, and color to caputure the character, personality, and attitude of that celebrity.

Step 1: Create Mood Board

I went to a couple fabric stores and found some great materials that expressed the direction i wanted to take. Sexy, Strong, Dark, and Mysterious.

Most men's cologne have that masculine feel, squared, thick and heavy.

I wanted to use this form and make it feminine without diluted its manly characteristics.

Step 4: Sketches of Packaging and logo

These are some of the many ideas i had but as you can see i didn't use any of them. Well, maybe i used some elements from them, but not the entire idea.

I created this simple graphic in Illustrator and printed it on decal paper. Stuck it on the back of the bottle, filled the bottle with light red liquid, and instead of a simple straw I used a sowing needle, that'll give it that tattoo artist vibe.

Overall I did a really good job in reaching my goal.

Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs are widely available and provide a greener alternative than traditional incandescent lightbulbs because of their longer lifespan and carbon dioxide emissions.

I developed, my version, of better packaging for CFL lighbulbs that both protects and promotes them as an environmentally-friendly light solutions. It's simple, attractive, and functional. I used simple chipboard (thin cardboard) material with 2-color printing to keep costs down and to promote recycling.

I decided to name this product "light brown" mainly because green has been used over and over on many eco friendly designs. Light-brown is another color that comes to my mind when I think of the environment. This design only requires 2 sheet of chipboard (10" x 5.5") with simple lightbulb cut outs. Since the chipboard is thick and sturdy it holds the bulb in place once inserted. Plastic and wires are not needed, and a minimal amount of glue is used to hold the two chipboard pieces together. Because of this, the design is simple, functional and environmentally-friendly.

I created a series of exploratory drawings leading to a reductive representation of an object in its entirety (not cropped). Determined the essential aspects of this three-dimensional object that can be used to communicate its nature in a two-dimensional representation. Explored organic and geometric forms, the relationship between thin line and massive solid, as well as other contrasting or harmonious forms. The objective of this exploration was to produce dynamic, simplified visual descriptions of an object. I chose a needle and thread.
